Why You Should Stop Biting Your Nails
Nail biting, technically called onychophagia, may seem innocent enough—in fact, up to 50 percent of us will chronically gnaw our nails at some point in our life. But experts warn that the nervous habit can have consequences far worse than ruining your pricey manicure.
It is most common for children and it is no big deal because it is easier for them to kick or grow out of this habit. It is much more difficult for adults. A study found that 15% of the grown-ups still have this habit in adulthood. Experts say it is a serious psychological problem, linked to anxiety, that can be overcome with the help of a doctor.
Biting your nails can rip and tear your nails and the skin around your nails, causing bleeding, infections and a lot of pain! Your nails and fingertips can become so sensitive that you may even have to eat those salt and vinegar chips with a spoon. Not only that, but there are also lots of germs living underneath your nails! If you’re chomping down on your nails, these germs can enter your mouth and you could get sick. Need another reason why it’s not healthy? It damages your front teeth. However, the nails often remain deformed. Psychologists advise people who have this problem to pay attention to the situations in which they feel the need to bite nails.
If the reason for biting your nails is stress, then you should apply different techniques to relax, sleep more, exercise etc. Seek support from friends and family or ask the people around you to warn you when you unconsciously start to nibble. Use lotions to strengthen the nails, or try coatings and special greases with a bitter taste and strong odour to prevent developing the habit.
There are tools and products you can use and will allow your nails and the surrounding skin to recover quickly if damage is already done.
It might not be that difficult for women. They are addressing this problem with nail polish in their favorite colour and once they have applied it, the idea is that they do not want to spoil the appearance of their freshly painted nail.
When you are nervous, anxious or you have a problem, make sure you do something to keep your hands away from your mouth. Buy a stress ball and squeeze it- it will help you get rid of tension.
