A planet that orbits very close to its sun can become dry because of solar heat. But now, scientists believe that an extreme greenhouse effect can also push a planet in dry conditions - similar to what happened on Venus. [ A Field Guide to Alien Planets ] The new research shows that warming due to carbon dioxide is as powerful as solar heat due to the orbit when it comes to drying of a planet. The modeling study was published today (February 9) in journal Nature Communications . "This is interesting because it tells you what you need to know more than the position of a planet to see if it could be habitable or not," said Max Popp, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher at the Institute Max Planck Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany. In the case of hot, hellish Venus , the water evaporates from the surface of the planet built on top of the planet's atmosphere and eventually escaped into space. This is called a "moist greenhouse effect." Today, the atmosphere of Venus is almost entirely carbon dioxide. (Earth is able to maintain its water due to the high atmosphere of this planet is quite dry.) To better understand the conditions that trigger these effects extreme gases , Popp and his colleagues created a 3D model of an Earthlike which has been completely covered by water planet. This water-simulated world meant that scientists could ignore the complicated effects of continents and seasons. The researchers found that once the carbon dioxide levels in the model reached 1,520 parts per million, the planet's climate was unstable. The surface temperatures quickly jumped to about 135 degrees Fahrenheit (57 degrees Celsius), creating a system of warm, humid greenhouse, the study reported. "A planet like Earth over time will change to a climate very warm, and will produce relatively abrupt, "said Popp Live Science. Researchers believe that changes in cloud patterns drive large-scale hot and humid greenhouse, Popp said. The location and thickness of the layer of clouds can change the amount of solar heat is trapped on a planet. Although the results suggest that greenhouse gases can be as lethal to a planet in orbit as too near a sun, this process could occur dioxide levels significantly higher carbon than those experienced in Earth today, according to the researchers. Popp said it is likely that human activity impossible to induce a similar humid greenhouse effect on Earth.
