Monsanto on Trial for Crimes Against Humanity and Nature

In an announcement made at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Paris, Monsanto will be put on trial by ecocide and crimes against humanity and nature. The trial will be held next year in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Holland on October 16, 2016 (by the way, and rightly, on World Food Day). Dozens of international food, agriculture and environmental justice groups, including: Millions Against Monsanto , the Organic Consumers Association Regeneration International and IFOAM Organics International -an umbrella organization of over 800 member organizations in 100 countries are involved in the legal action.
the International Court of Justice paper is to settle disputes in accordance with international law and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations agencies. While the test is still ten months away and the result will be determined by the Court, the announcement comes as a victory for many environmentalists or foods that are making the final stand against the practices of a company they consider unethical.
As part of the announcement Andre Leu, president of IFOAM boldly declared: "Monsanto is able to ignore the human and environmental damage for their products and maintain its devastating activities through a systemic concealment strategy: lobbying regulators and governments, resorting to lies and corruption, fraudulent by funding scientific studies, by pressuring independent scientists and by manipulating the press and the media. "
the announcement follows the steps of a recent French decision court charge Monsanto chemical poisoning . In addition, the World Health Organization stated earlier this year that glyphosate is a " probable carcinogen ".
flagship product pesticide Monsanto known as "Roundup" contains glyphosate and is used in conjunction with their own seeds of genetically modified Roundup Ready company (corn, soybean and rapeseed). Even after the research agency of the World Health Organization, IARC, cancer said glyphosate a probable carcinogen, Monsanto continues to maintain in his statement that "No regulatory agency in the world believes the glyphosate is a carcinogen. " By the way, Environmental Protection Agency California has also announced that it will label glyphosate as a "carcinogen" as part of their Proposition 65 it implies the requirement that the state publish a list of products that can cause cancer or birth defects.
However, the legal action was not initiated solely due to the development of glyphosate company. As part of its legal demands of dozens of groups opposed to Monsanto in the International Court of Justice they are citing a long history of toxic products developed by the company, including: PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls); 2,4,5-T (2,4, 5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid which is a component of Agent Orange) and Lasso (a herbicide banned in Europe).
Like many food activists, I have hope that the public statement of the physicist, author and activist Vandana Shiva prefigures the court decision : "Monsanto has pushed GMOs in order to collect royalties of poor farmers, trapping them in unpayable debt, and drive them to suicide. Monsanto promotes an agroindustrial model that contributes at least 50 percent of global emissions of greenhouse gases anthropogenic. Monsanto is also largely responsible for the loss of soil and water resources, extinction of species and the decline of biodiversity, and displacement of millions of small farmers around the world. "
