Can Pets Detect Cancer Without Being Trained?
September was National Service Dog Month. A fairly new type of work for dogs is cancer detection. Dogs trained to sniff out cancer are heavily rewarded for their nose work, isolating cancer chemicals that only dogs can smell. They can often sniff out cancer before a machine can see cancerous cells.
While canine cancer detection usually involves purebred dogs trained from an early age to do their work, sometimes our pets just naturally do this work without any training. And it’s work that cats can do, too. Tom, a 20-year-old cat, has been part of Sue McKenzie’s family since she adopted Tom as a stray kitten, according to The Dodo. McKenzie found it very strange when Tom started pawing the back of her neck, as he’s normally a cat who doesn’t seek out human attention. Tom was so persistent at pawing at her neck that Sue had the spot checked out—and doctors found a lump. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Luckily, it was an early detection. While McKenzie saved Tom’s life as a stray kitty 20 years ago, she never could have known that Tom would be saving her own life 20 years later.
That’s not to say that cats have to be mature to warn their owners about cancer. 10-month-old kitty, Fidge, kept jumping on Wendy Humphreys’ breast. Fidge was so persistent that Humphreys went to her doctor. Huffington Post reported, “She had a malignant tumor in her breast about the size of a pea that could have metastasized if it hadn’t been discovered early.”
Dogs not trained for canine detection work seem to also have a 6th sense for finding early signs of cancer in their people. Colleen Ferguson, 60, told Mirror.co.uk that her German Shepherd, Inca, started sniffing her breath. She had been feeling a little tired, but not enough to seek medical help. But, when Inca repeatedly kept sniffing her breath, tests revealed a golf-ball sized tumor in her left lung. It turns out that Inca saved Ferguson’s life, as she had the cancerous tumor removed at an early stage.
