When Trying To Lose Weight, Is A Low-Fat Diet Better Than A Low-Carb One? (The Answer May Surprise You)

With thousands of studies conducted each year, by various medical teams, it was only a matter of time before researchers began to investigate the differences between two of the most popular diets. This recent study has shown that low fat diets are more effective than low carb diets, when it comes to weight loss and losing body fat.

The man behind this study is Kevin Hall, a researcher from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). He felt that people have very strong beliefs about what weight loss plan works best, but there was no scientific data to back up people’s opinions.

For his study, Kevin Hall monitored 19 obese adults for two separate 2-week periods. One of the problems that commonly occurs during these types of studies is ensuring that the people being studied actually stick to the required meal plans and are honest about reporting the food they consume. To remedy this issue, Hall and his team decided to keep the adults inside a research ward, to monitor and control the variables.

The study was divided into two, 2-week period. During the first part, thirty percent of the adults had a diet that focused on reducing carbohydrates, while the second period required thirty percent of the adults to reduce their fat intake.

Calculating the Results

Once the research phase of the study was concluded, Hall and his team calculated the results. They measured body fat loss, looking and net fat oxidation and daily fat intake. Hall came to the conclusion that both diets could help people lose body fat, but the low-fat diet would lead to the best potential for overall fat loss.

When on the low-carb diet, participants were able to burn more fat, over a shorter period of time, with less weight loss in the long run. On the low-fat diet, participants had the most weight loss. Further, the researchers admit that these studies are not concrete evidence of how other people will react to various diets, as the controlled environment used during the study is not the same as an individual making their own choices.

In the end, Hall has come to the hypothesis that the best option is to find a healthy diet that you can stick to. For now, further research must be done to gain a better understanding of how different diets will have an impact on a person’s health and weight loss.

The next step, for Hall and his researchers, is to explore the impact of diets on the parts of the brain that relate to reward, to determine why different people react to diets in different ways.

Low Fat vs. Low Carb Diets: Which Is The Winner When It Comes To Losing Weight?

So, which diet pulls ahead and wins the competition? According to recent research, it looks like you should place your bets on a low fat diet. A small study determined that overall – a low fat diet offers the best chance of providing long-term weight loss. The low-carb diet allows people to burn fat quickly, but as the metabolism adjusts to the diet, this weight loss can stagnate.

While the results of this recent study show that a low-fat diet can help you lose weight, you should also pay attention to the amount of refined sugar that you consume, otherwise – your low-fat diet could lead to an increased risk of heart disease. People on a low-fat diet tend to fill themselves with unhealthy carbohydrates and may suffer from increased cholesterol levels.

If you are looking for a diet that will offer the most health benefits, while helping you to lose weight, then consider following a diet that limits fat intake. Search for healthy, whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as food that can help lower your cholesterol. Finally, make sure that your diet includes a variety of foods – for optimal nutrition.
