Every day, five times a day, Muslims around the world face the holy site of Mecca and pray . Mecca is believed to be the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, but when fans visit the site, is not really Mecca, but face a building called the Kaaba. The Kaaba is a mosque and a corner of this sacred building, is a cornerstone known as the Black Stone. His story is a mystery and there is much speculation about what might be the stone. Many Muslims believe that the stone is actually a meteorite that has supernatural powers.
The Hajj pilgrimage ritual
Millions of Muslims travel to Mecca, Saudi Arabia each year and in one day, Mecca is able to attract more than two million Muslim followers for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, considered one of the five pillars of Islam.

Muslims believe that God commanded the Kaaba built. the story goes that Abraham built the mosque with his eldest son Ishmael in the likeness of the house of God in heaven.
Supposedly the oldest mosque on Earth, is believed to was originally used by pagans before Islam came into existence. According to Islamic tradition, the stone was established intact on the wall of the Kaaba by prophet Mohammed in 605 AD.
Muslims also believe that the Kaaba stone once was part of the stones from the sky. There are several versions of its origin story, all similar to each other. When Adam was expelled from the Garden of Eden, which was full of sin. the Black stone was given to him to erase this sin and allow the entry again in heaven. Some believe that instead of the old stone was brought from a nearby mountain by the archangel Gabriel.
During the passage of time, the stone has suffered significant damage. During the siege of Mecca Umayyads in 683 AD, is said to have been beaten and broken into pieces by a stone fired from a catapult.
In the year 930 was stolen by a small Shiite sect called the Qarmatians, that took him back to their base in Hajar, Bahrain today. According to the Ottoman historian Qutb al-Din, Qarmatian leader, Abu Tahir al-Qarmati, set the Black Stone in its own mosque, intended to reorient the hajj away from Mecca. This failed, however, and continued pilgrims to venerate the place where the Black Stone had been with after being returned parts.

According to the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1674, someone smeared the Black Stone of excrement for " he kissed everyone who withdrew with a beard sullied. " Persians were suspected of being responsible and subjected to insults from other Muslims for centuries later.
Today, the stone is still divided into several pieces with estimates ranging from seven to as many as fifteen. These fragments are held together by a silver frame, which is attached to the stone by silver nails.

Because it has allowed no scientific studies on the stone, which is possible only speculate about what might be. Theories have ranged from being basalt stone, agate, or rock obsidian an alien artifact.
One theory proposes that the stone is a meteorite worshiped by the pre-Muslim, pagan Arabs.
