Often women live longer than men. However, this is not down to the men working or drinking too much, rather it is because DNA inherited from their mothers. geneticists call this the "curse of the mother" as the defective genes can cause health problems in men.

Scientists say this shows that men are, in fact, the weaker sex and this could explain why women often outlive men. Statistically, researchers may have a point, as the statistics of Eurostat , which is the statistical office of the European Union, found that women outlive men on the block in 5.5 years on average .

The research was conducted by the University of Otago in New Zealand. studies fruit flies and fish were carried out for more than a decade, with research showing that mutations in DNA were only harmful when passed from mothers to their sons.

"I think of males as being an evolutionary dead end with respect to mitochondrial DNA. So get it, you should not pass it on to our children and we just have to make the most of it" Professor Neil Gemmell at the University of Otago said, the Daily Mail reported.

However, Gemmell says that other factors must be taken into account to explain why women statistically live longer than men and that men can not blame only bad genetics of his misfortune.

"The longevity gap is only two to five years. It's not huge and there are all sorts of other factors contributing to our shorter lives, and the fact that men do not go to medical and hide their problems, " said genetic expert.
