All The Water In This Lake Vanishes Down a Hole Every Summer
In the mountains of Oregon, there is a shallow lake right next to the road that disappears once a year during the dry summer months, then reappears during wet seasons. It's called Lost Lake, and his act of magic disappearance is due to a lava tube.

These geographic features are transmitted when lava cools and hardens at the top, while the hot interior beneath the surface continue to flow downhill. The tunnel is behind can open a hole after an eruption or through erosion. Lava tubes ranging from small individual garbage-can-size tunnel underground medium can walk through scattered across the volcanic terrain of Central Oregon and the Cascade Range.

Several streams flow into the 0.34 square kilometers (0.13 square miles) Lost Lake, all of which drain into a (possibly two) of these large holes on the north side of the lake. Water starts pouring in during the late fall and continues through the rain and snowstorms. "It fills in the winter, when the input is higher than the rate of drainage, and then dried and is a meadow," National Forest spokesman Jude McHugh says Bulletin of Bend, Oregon. The hole has been there as long as anyone can remember.

Lost lake probably formed about 3,000 years ago when lava flows from a volcanic vent blocked a channel of the river to create a lake McHugh says to Live Science. It sits atop 12,000-year-old volcanic rock that was full of bubbles again when it was forming. When the gas escaped into the atmosphere, it left behind pores along with several cracks and fissures in the landscape.

do not know if the water flowing into the hole travels to an outlet, though McHugh thinks it is likely that seeps into the porous subsoil below the recharge of the aquifer that feeds the springs on both sides Cascades. It can take a decade for water to seep through all holes and cracks.

"Here in western Oregon, which again excel in the valley and supplies drinking water and important habitat for humans, fish and all kinds of species," he adds. "That water that fell today, there is a child who will be born tomorrow he'll be drinking when he's 10." [Via Live Science, The Bulletin]
