Had acne in adolescence? You are more likely to develop skin cancer, according to researchers.
A new study shows a strong association between teenage acne and melanoma in women.
After analyzing data from the Nurses' Health Study II, involving 99.128 nurses who were followed for 20 years, the principal investigator, Dr. Mingfeng
Zhang, MD, Ph. D., and colleagues at Brigham and women's Hospital Boston, found a women who suffered severe adolescent acne were significantly more likely to develop melanoma in adulthood, according to HealthDay.
The relative risk for melanoma increased when the researchers took into account known risk factors for each cancer. Previous studies have found that people who suffer from acne in adolescence were significantly more likely to develop moles.
"Our findings suggest that a history of teenage acne could be a new risk factor for independent melanoma of known factors, which supports a need for further investigation of these relations," the researchers concluded .
The findings have been published on January 8 in the journal Cancer .
