With a war against marijuana drugs still rages in more countries than not, the question of how long-term marijuana use effects that the human brain is a key issue in its legalization.

Fortunately, the debate can finally leave the realm of opinion on scientific evidence as researchers from the University of Texas just published their research on long-term effects of marijuana use in the brain in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences).

The researcher helped dispel the myth of death that marijuana lowers IQ , and in fact provides further evidence for the potential of marijuana role in the fight against Alzheimer disease.

The investigation revealed that the earlier onset of regular use of marijuana leads to more structural and functional connectivity in the brain. The most significant increases in connectivity appear as an individual starts using marijuana, with results showing that the severity of use is directly correlated with increased connectivity.

Although these results should be confirmed with a larger sample (this was based on approximately 100 participants), preliminary results look promising. will have to be done in order to see if these differences are caused by or associated with simply, marijuana use more long-term research.

They also found reduced gray matter in the OFC (orbitofrontalcortex) in long-term users (which is a region of the brain associated with addiction), it is unclear whether this region is simply smaller in regular users (which explains their regular use) or whether the use actually contributed to structural changes in the brain.
