Poisonous and Toxic? What You’re Eating That’s Killing Your Brain and Body

By Dr. K. J. McLaughlin

I think most people understand that excessive consumption of sugar is a bad thing. We know it can lead to severe tooth decay and contribute to weight gain, irregularities in blood sugar and insulin spikes. But now the big question is "is sugar toxic?"

According to Dr. Robert Lustig, an expert in childhood obesity at the University of California in San Francisco, "sugar is toxic beyond its calories . "

If one takes into account only the amount of sugar we consume, you might actually be surprised and react like Dr. Lustig. For example, the average Canadian eats 26 teaspoons of sugar a day, which is 20 bags per year! And the average American consumes about 80 pounds of sugar per year!

Given that the American Heart Association recommends that men consume no more nine teaspoons of sugar per day and women consume no more than six, the average American consumes more than the recommended limit, and that's what worries health experts like Dr. Lustig.

"I use these words and I'm saying. This is not hyperbole. This is the real business," he said. "Everyone thinks that the bad effects of sugar are because sugar is empty calories. What I am saying is that no, there are plenty of things that do have empty calories that are not necessarily poisonous".

Sugar, or sucrose, a disaccharide molecule composed of one glucose and one fructose molecule. The problem is what happens when this "innocent" compound is metabolized by the body.

"When metabolize fructose in excess, the liver has no choice but to turn that energy into fat liver and fat liver makes all metabolic diseases downstream "said Dr. Lustig.

the data certainly supports this idea that excess fructose intake can increase the production of triglycerides in the liver and promote storage fatty acid within it. When the amount of fat stored in the liver increases, cells may become resistant to insulin, which is a precursor for metabolic syndrome and high levels of systemic inflammation. Other diseases, such as obesity, may be caused directly by the toxic amount of sugar we consume, according to Dr. Lustig.

What is more worrying is that currently, there is no recommendation regarding safety limits daily sugar intake. Despite this fact, pressure from the food industry maintains that there is no need to establish recommended in relation to the consumption of sugar daily limits.

"I think it's important that we step back and look for ways to educate and help consumers of sugar as a healthy dietary pattern, "said Phyllis Tanaka, vice president of scientific and regulatory Food and consumer Products of Canada issues.

well, how can we do this when there are no recommendations on safety limits consumption of sugar and when labeling is often misleading? In addition, Ms. Tanaka is spokesman for a group of very large and influential food pressure, so be careful regarding their own credibility and bias (she also said that, at this time, there is no direct relationship between sugar consumption and disease).

the science is very clear about the excessive consumption of simple sugars and their collective on blood sugar effects, insulin secretion, accumulation of body fat, production of triglycerides and blood pressure.

in my opinion, there is no doubt that sugar causes weight gain and metabolic disorders in children and young adults. But sugar is toxic? I would be reluctant to admit that sugar should be considered a poison. However, the effects of the excessive consumption of sugar over long periods of time are potentially addictive and certainly disastrous. In my opinion, efforts to reduce sugar consumption should be aggressive and close
