A new study published in The Lancet Oncology shows that anxiety can develop and persist in cancer survivors and their spouses, long after the cancer has gone into remission.

Although studies show that depression in cancer patients usually disappears after symptoms of cancer have disappeared, anxiety can develop in place, and may even become more severe over time. There have not been many studies before it focused on mental well-being of the spouses of cancer survivors.

This particular study analyzed data from 43 studies with 51.381 patients with a wide range of types of Cancer. The analysis showed that two to ten years after their diagnosis, 18 percent of patients were still experiencing severe anxiety, compared with 14 percent of the general population.

Although this was not a drastic difference, the results for the couples were more dramatic. The researchers found that anxiety levels of the couples was 28 percent for the patient, and 40 percent for the spouse of the patient.

According to Dr. Alex J. Mitchell, lead author of the study and professor of psycho-oncology at the University of Leicester, "anxiety is a persistent problem long after the cancer has been diagnosed ... that seems to be at least equal and such and more of a problem for spouses patients. "

Dr. Laura B. Dunn, of the University of California in San Francisco, agrees. "Anxiety can not diminish over time," she says.

A very proven, natural and healthy for cancer survivors and their spouses way to curb their feelings of anxiety is regular meditation. Daily meditation can be even more effective for spouses if meditate together. A growing number of studies show that meditation can relieve stress and anxiety, and maintain these feelings recur if practiced regularly.

A study conducted at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience in June 2013, found that "mindfulness meditation" really changed the way in which brain regions were activated to form patterns less anxious thought.

the study surveyed 15 volunteers, all in good health and with normal levels of anxiety, and no previous experience with the meditation. Subjects were enrolled in classes that teach techniques of 'mindfulness meditation', which included focus on bodily sensations and breathing in the present moment, and to assess the emotions and thoughts that distract without trial.

Wake researchers Baptist Medical Center found that after each meditation session, experienced less anxiety pictures taken from volunteers' brains show the areas of the brain were activated. - the anterior cingulate cortex, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and insula previous -. were the same regions that control higher functions of the brain, as well as control of the concern

Although it is quite understandable that cancer survivors and their spouses may feel persistent anxiety long after the cancer has plummeted, daily meditation can greatly alleviate these feelings of panic, and help patients to relax and get back to enjoying life to the fullest
