Genetically Modified Mosquitoes Release in the Millions with No Risk Assessment
If you did not know genetically modified mosquitoes have been unleashed numerous times on planet Earth. So far, millions of mosquitoes were released in various places; Cayman Islands, Malaysia and Brazil. Now, the creator of GM mosquitoes Oxitec can release millions of genetically modified mosquitoes in the fields of crops, including olives, citrus, cabbage, tomatoes and cotton.A company based in the UK, Oxitec is the creator of all genetically modified insects. The company goal is to create a global market where transgenic insects will be released worldwide in order to take care of natural insect populations. With the replacement of natural insects, the company expects to eliminate insect and insects that feed on crops farmers diseases. As difficult as it may seem, thousands of insect species can be genetically altered in the near future.
What is particularly frightening about modification of the release and the future of thousands of species is that all this be done with little risk assessment. Not to mention not know of the large number of negative results that may arise from genetic modification parts of the biosphere.
Dr. Helen Wallace, Director of GeneWatch UK said "The public will be surprised to know that GM insects can be released into the environment without any proper supervision. Conflicts of interest must be removed from all decision-making to ensure that the public has a good example of these plans. "To help release transgenic insects, Oxitec is influencing the regulation worldwide. An example of the influence revolves around the European Food Safety Authority, established to assist the risk assessment of GM insects. As reported by FarmWars , it seems that there are numerous cases of conflict of interest, which includes experts with links to Oxitec. The connection of AESA and Oxitec is very similar to that of Monsanto connection by the FDA, where several government officials have hard to biotech giant Monsanto bonds.
The draft guidance on risk assessment transgenic insects shows some important shortcomings: for example, does not consider the impacts of genetically modified insects in the food chain. Oxitec transgenic insects are genetically engineered to die especially in the larval stage as dead larvae GM will enter the food chain into food crops such as olives, cabbages and tomatoes. Living transgenic insects could also be transported in crops from other farms or different countries. EFSA has excluded any consideration of these important issues of the draft guidance. Many other issues that are not addressed properly.
A report shows how Oxitec is trying to influence the processes regulating transgenic insects. Oxitec:
- not want to be responsible for any complications.
- tries to avoid any regulation of transgenic agricultural crop pests listed on the food chain.
- No significant issues of risk assessments, such as the impact on immunity and human disease, and possible outcomes derived from transgenic mosquitoes survive are included.
- Releases lot of transgenic mosquitoes before its regulations.
- Attempts to define "biological containment 'of insects (that are scheduled to die in the larval stage) as contained use, ignoring the requirements for risk assessment and consultation on decisions to release insects genetically modified in the environment.
- violating the requirement to obtain informed consent for experiments involving species of insects that transmit diseases consent.
- ignores any labeling using products produced from insects transgenic and how insects can be contained released
